I started this journey not knowing much about the home building process but my wife, Lori, and I had a vision and were eager to get started. So we put a plan together and began this awesome adventure!
Our goal was to be as creative and unique as possible. Through unwavering support from Lori (who quickly became master of the scissor lift, de facto accountant, and interior designer), over-the-top help from our close friends, and dedicated work, we created our one-of-a-kind home over the course of nearly three years.
We considered all structural options (post & beam, barndominium, traditional home model, log home, etc). However, these build types come with more structural needs and contractors plus their subcontractors. My vision was to be my own "general contractor" and determine the entire direction of the process according to our vision.
My father was a Marine and he lived in these types of buildings for a number of years. The military relied on this type of building because they offer pure structural strength in all conditions. For us, it was perfect. Creating a home using environmentally friendly materials and systems was also important to us. After more research, I could envision us accomplishing the build. And we did!
Interested in taking on a similar project? Want to learn more about quonsets and the building process from plans to finished home?
I learned so much from every stage of this build. With our quonset complete, I would like to share my expertise and try to make it easier and more organized for others embarking on this endeavor. Send me an email to start the conversation!
